We try to encourage people of all abilities to train
with us.
Most of us want to be in better shape. If we never
get out there, how are we going to accomplish this? Our training is progressive, so each day will build on
the previous days skills.
The more prepared you are, the more fun you will have.
If you are coming on one of our training excursions
(kayaking or backpacking) you certainly will
benefit from some advanced preparation. Spend some
times in your hiking boots, breaking them in. Stretching
every day and reap you tremendous benefits. So whether
it is a little or a lot, it all will help!
If you are significantly overweight
you can call us to discuss any possible issues you might
have. You should also discuss any physical activity with
your doctor before proceeding.

Purchase and test any gear that you don't already
have. It is important that your gear fits well, and
performs as you expect it to.
Start working out or walking each day. Even if it is
just 20 minutes, this can help tremendously.
Read. Get some guidebooks or maps of the area. This will
help you become more familiar with the terrain and local
area and you will have a better idea of what to expect.

If you think sleeping outside is not comfortable, then
you might be surprised at how cozy a tent, sleeping bag,
and good air mattress will feel! After a long day on
the trail, your tent can be a nice refuge to rest,
sleep, and write in your journal.
Must of your enjoyment from these trips will be in
your willingness to open your mind to new experiences
and meet challenges head on. Being able to face
adversity, and come out knowing that you did it, can
result in tremendous satisfaction.
Most people are pleasantly surprised at how much they
enjoyed the tenting experience. Also remember that there
have been tremendous improvements in gear and fabrics,
allowing you to sleep dry and warm!
Your personal choice of clothing is the single most
important factor for determining how comfortable you are
on the trail, in the kayak, or in your tent. If you have
any questions, please let us know!

For tent/camping: Generally, weather and equipment
allowing, you will only share a tent with the person you
are traveling with. If you are traveling alone,
you will sleep alone. Hotels/Cabins: These can be
group situations. Usually in hotels it will be two
ladies per room. We do offer single supplements. In
cabins, everyone gets their own "bunk"

The quick answer is - Certainly! There have been
women in their mid 70's hike the entire Appalachian
Trail (over 2000 miles). We have had women in
their 70's participate in our rescue classes and do
wonderfully.
Mindset and attitude is much more important than age!
